The Mental Treadmill

We’ve all been there at 2:00 AM—replaying a conversation from three years ago, dissecting the “tone” of a text message, or catastrophizing a future event that hasn’t even happened yet. Overthinking feels like being on a treadmill: you’re moving fast, you’re exhausted, but you haven’t actually gone anywhere.

As women, we are often natural nurturers and planners. But when our “planning” turns into “rumination,” we are essentially trying to play God. We think that if we can just analyze the problem from one more angle, we can control the outcome.

The truth? Overthinking is often just a sophisticated form of fear.

Breaking the Cycle

In 2 Timothy 1:7, we are reminded that a chaotic, swirling mind does not come from the Father. He has given you a “sound mind.” In the original Greek, this term refers to sophronismos—a mind that is self-controlled, disciplined, and properly prioritized.

When we overthink, we are letting our thoughts lead us, rather than leading our thoughts. To overcome this, we have to practice two things:

  1. The “God-Filter”: Is this thought productive, or is it just a loop? If it doesn’t lead to prayer or action, it’s likely a distraction.
  2. Surrender of the “What Ifs”: Overthinking is the attempt to solve a future that doesn’t exist yet. God doesn’t give “grace for tomorrow” today; He gives us enough for right now.

Reflective Prayer

Lord, I hand over my racing thoughts to You. I confess that I often try to control my life by over-analyzing everything. Please silence the noise in my head with the peace of Your Spirit. Help me to recognize when I am spiraling and give me the strength to “take every thought captive.” I trust that You are in the details I can’t control. In Jesus name, Amen.

Moving Forward

Today, when you feel a “thought loop” starting, physically pause. Take a breath and say out loud: “God is not the author of confusion, but of peace.”

Stop trying to figure out the “why” and start leaning into the “Who.”
