From the Desk of Your Empowerment Life Coach- Incorporating Margin for a Peaceful Heart

In our fast-paced world, the relentless demands of work, family, and ministry can leave us feeling stretched thin and spiritually depleted. We chase deadlines, juggle responsibilities, and often neglect the very thing our souls crave: peace. As Christians, we are called to a life of abundance, but that abundance isn't found in a packed schedule; it's found in a heart surrendered to God, a heart that finds rest in Him. This rest, this peace, is often cultivated through the practice of margin.

What is Margin?

Margin, in its simplest form, is the space between our load and our limits. It’s the buffer zone that allows us to breathe, to reflect, and to connect with God. It’s the intentional setting aside of time and resources for the things that truly matter, rather than being driven by the urgent and the immediate.

Why Margin Matters for Christians:

  • Honoring the Sabbath: God himself established the principle of rest in Genesis, creating the Sabbath as a day of sacred pause. By incorporating margin, we are honoring God’s design for our lives, acknowledging our limitations, and trusting in His provision.

  • Cultivating Intimacy with God: A crowded schedule leaves little room for prayer, Bible study, and quiet reflection. Margin provides the space to draw near to God, to listen to His voice, and to experience His presence.

  • Serving Others Effectively: When we are constantly running on empty, we are less effective in serving others. Margin allows us to replenish our spiritual and emotional reserves, enabling us to pour out from a place of abundance rather than depletion.

  • Combating Anxiety and Stress: Jesus reminds us in Matthew 11:28-30, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Margin provides the opportunity to lay our burdens at the foot of the cross, allowing God to carry them for us.

  • Developing a Heart of Gratitude: When we are constantly rushed, we often overlook the blessings in our lives. Margin allows us to slow down, to appreciate God's goodness, and to cultivate a heart of gratitude.

Practical Ways to Incorporate Margin:

  • Schedule Intentional Rest: Just as God rested on the seventh day, we need to prioritize rest in our weekly schedules. This might involve setting aside a Sabbath day, taking regular breaks throughout the day, or simply going to bed earlier.

  • Say "No" Gracefully: Learning to say "no" is essential for creating margin. We cannot be all things to all people. Pray for wisdom and discernment to prioritize commitments that align with God's calling for your life.

  • Simplify Your Life: Examine your schedule and identify areas where you can simplify. This might involve decluttering your home, streamlining your routines, or cutting back on unnecessary activities.

Prioritize Prayer and Bible Study: Make time each day to connect with God through prayer and Bible study. Even a few minutes of intentional quiet time can make a significant difference.

  • Practice Being Present and Gratitude: Take time to appreciate the present moment and to express gratitude for God's blessings. This can involve journaling, spending time in nature, or simply reflecting on the good things in your life.

  • Plan for Unplanned Events: Build in extra time for unexpected delays and emergencies. This will help reduce stress and prevent your schedule from becoming overloaded.

  • Delegate Tasks: Do not think you need to do everything yourself. Where applicable, delegate tasks to other people. This is biblical, as we see in the old testament with Jethro advising Moses.

  • Protect your time: Set boundaries with technology, and other time consuming distractions.

The Fruit of Margin:

By incorporating margin into our lives, we can experience a deeper sense of peace, joy, and fulfillment. We can cultivate a closer relationship with God, serve others more effectively, and live a life that reflects the abundance of Christ.
