Did you know that you don’t have to think just whatever comes into your mind?

Oftentimes, our minds are stuck in a repeated pattern of thinking the same things every day. We may not even realize that we tend to think the same thing every day until the loop is stopped by intentionally focusing our thoughts on thoughts that are good, lovely, praiseworthy, and peaceful (Philippians 4:6-8).

I want to share with you 7 effective ways that you can discipline your mind and train your brain. I have developed this list after I struggled with many years with negative thinking. This list works, but it takes training and discipline, which = hard work!

Let me speak some encouragement to you before you begin to try and train your brain. You very likely will come against resistance from yourself and from the enemy. This is part of overcoming a negative mindset. You will, at times, feel you are not making any progress, and you may also feel like quitting when you don’t get immediate, tangible results. You won’t do everything perfectly, but if you don’t quit during these times, you will ensure a more successful outcome in having a disciplined mind.

Now, here are the 7 effective ways to discipline your mind:

1.    Become aware of your thoughts. Sounds simple, but we often do not give much thought to what we are thinking about. Get a journal and write out your most intrusive and negative thoughts, then replace each negative thought with scripture and faith-filled declarations. Write these on notecards and speak them out loud every day until those thoughts are no longer intrusive.

2.    Get some alone time with God and journal. Write out all your worries, concerns, and what bothers you. If you need someone to process your story with you, I would love to come alongside you and encourage you through this process. Email life coaching works wonderful for getting things on paper and having a trained eye to look into the issues that have occurred in your life. I also offer personal 1:1 coaching if you need someone to connect with you on this level.

3.    Spend time in the morning with God, praying and cast ALL your cares upon him (1 Peter 5:7). When the thoughts pop up through the day, thank the Lord for interceding for you and for His help. Keep redirecting your mind in this way until you stop thinking about it.

4.    Replace anything negative that you are watching or listening to with other activities that are uplifting and encouraging to you.

5.    Speak life! Speak blessings! We can frame our lives by what we speak. What are you speaking, what fruit is it producing? Life and death are in the power of the tongue. Choose what you speak carefully.

6.    Take control of your thoughts. You don’t have to just think whatever comes into your mind. Some thoughts are our own and other times, it is from the enemy. There are times when you may be dealing with a spirit of negativity, and this spirit needs to be cast out in the name and authority of Jesus Christ.

7.    Journal your progress daily in any areas that you are struggling in and what you are progressing in.

You can train your brain! With a little hard work through discipline, you can have a mind that is set on things above and not of this world, and you can have a mind that focuses on those things that are good, lovely, praiseworthy, and a good report.

You can have a new mindset in as little as 30 days!
