“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” — Ephesians 2:10
Comparison can steal your joy, but it can do something even more dangerous: it can rob you of who God created you to be.
You were not created to be like everyone else.
You were created uniquely, intentionally, and with purpose. You would do well to take the time to discover how God created you to function.
Do you know your personality?
Do you know your strengths and weaknesses?
Do you know your spiritual gifts?
Do you know how much sleep you need to function at your best?
Do you know what gives you energy and what drains you?
Do you know your goals and vision for your life?
Do you recognize the generational strongholds you need to overcome?
Do you know what helps you become spiritually, emotionally, and mentally recharged?
These things matter.
Stop Trying to Live Someone Else’s Life
Many people spend their lives watching what others are doing and then trying to pattern their lives after them. There is nothing wrong with having people you admire or people who inspire you. In fact, it can be beneficial to learn from others.
But there is a difference between being inspired by someone and trying to become someone else.
You can admire someone’s discipline without having their exact routine.
You can admire someone’s success without having their exact path.
You can learn from someone’s spiritual life without copying their relationship with God.
You can be inspired by someone’s ministry without being called to the same ministry.
God did not call you to become a copy of someone else. He called you to become the person He created you to be.
When you constantly pattern your life after someone else’s life, you may eventually become exhausted, frustrated, and unfulfilled because you are trying to live according to a blueprint that wasn’t designed for you.
Social Media Can Intensify the Comparison Trap
We live in a time when we are constantly exposed to other people’s lives.
We see what people are eating, where they are traveling, what they are buying, how successful they appear to be, how they decorate their homes, how they exercise, how they spend their mornings, how they parent, how they build businesses, and even how they spend time with God.
Social media is filled with influencers, and there is nothing inherently wrong with following people who encourage or inspire you.
But we have to be careful.
Much of what we see online has been carefully selected, edited, filtered, enhanced, or even created with AI. We may be comparing our real life to someone else’s carefully curated presentation.
That is not a fair comparison.
Before you spend your life trying to become like someone you follow, ask yourself:
“Are they pointing me to Jesus, or are they pointing me primarily to themselves?”
That question can reveal a lot.
We Were Never Created to Worship Ourselves
I believe we live in a culture that has become increasingly focused on self.
Just look at the word selfie.
There is nothing wrong with taking a picture of yourself. The issue is what happens when our focus continually turns inward.
We were never created to worship ourselves.
And we were never created to worship other people.
Our identity will never be found in trying to become someone else, gaining someone’s approval, accumulating followers, or creating an image that makes us feel valuable.
Our identity is found in Christ.
You don’t have to compete with someone else’s calling because God has given you your own.
You don’t have to look like them.
You don’t have to have their personality.
You don’t have to have their energy level.
You don’t have to have their schedule.
You don’t have to have their gifts.
You don’t have to have their story.
You don’t even have to have their definition of success.
Sit With Jesus and Ask, “Who Am I?”
If you don’t really know how God created you, perhaps it’s time to slow down and spend some intentional time with Jesus.
Ask Him:
Who am I?
What have You created me to do?
What are my strengths?
What are my weaknesses?
What spiritual gifts have You given me?
What areas of my life need to grow?
What have You called me to?
What does obedience look like for me in this season?
What do I need to stop comparing?
What do You want me to focus on right now?
You may discover that you are quite different from the people you have been trying to emulate.
And that’s okay.
In fact, that may be the point.
You may discover that God has intentionally made you unique because He has given you a unique assignment.
Stop the Comparison Trap
You don’t have to spend your life trying to keep up with someone else’s life.
Their race is not your race.
Their timing is not your timing.
Their calling is not your calling.
Their personality is not your personality.
Their journey is not your journey.
You are God’s workmanship.
There is freedom in discovering who God created you to be rather than constantly trying to become who someone else is.
So stop comparing.
Stop measuring your life against someone else’s highlight reel.
Stop assuming that because something works for someone else, it must work for you.
Learn yourself.
Know yourself.
Understand your strengths and weaknesses.
Discover your spiritual gifts.
Pay attention to what God is doing in your life.
And most importantly, know your Creator.
Because the more you know the One who created you, the less you will feel the need to become someone else.
A Prayer
Lord, help me break free from the trap of comparison. Forgive me for the times I have looked at other people’s lives and decided that I need to become more like them instead of becoming more like You.
Help me discover how You uniquely created me. Show me my strengths, weaknesses, spiritual gifts, purpose, and calling. Give me wisdom to know what I should embrace, what I should change, and what I should simply accept as part of the way You created me.
Help me to stop comparing my journey to someone else’s journey. Teach me to be content with who You created me to be while continuing to grow into the person You have called me to become.
May my identity never be found in other people, social media, success, approval, or myself. May my identity always be rooted in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Final Encouragement
Comparison will not only steal your joy, but it will rob you of who you are.
You don’t need to become someone else to have a meaningful life.
You don’t need to copy someone else’s path to fulfill God’s purpose.
You need to discover who God created you to be—and then have the courage to become that person.
There is only one you.
And that is not a mistake.
God made you uniquely, intentionally, and for a purpose.
Don’t spend your life trying to become someone else when God is inviting you to become who He created you to be.
