Finding Freedom: Three Lies That Keep Christian Women Chained to the To-Do List
In our culture, the to-do list has become a heavy yoke, turning time into a predator that chases us, leaving us in a constant state of “hurry sickness”. For Christian women, the constant demand to “do it all”—to serve perfectly, nurture endlessly, and achieve flawlessly—blurs the line between devotion and performance. While we know the theological truth of our worth in Christ, the unrelenting pressure of an unfinished list makes us feel like our value hangs on what we accomplish.
If you’ve been feeling “less-than,” chances are you’ve fallen for one of these three common lies. Let’s hold them up to the light.
Lie #1: “My Worth is Equal to My Productivity”
This is the “Martha Complex.” We believe that if the laundry is folded, the kids are thriving, and the inbox is at zero, then we are “good” women. We treat our relationship with God like a performance review.
The Truth: Your value was settled at the Cross before you ever checked a single item off your list. Meditate on this: Rest isn’t a reward for finishing your work; it’s a gift from a Father who loves you for who you are, not what you do.
Lie #2: Earning Redemption: When Your To-Do List Tries to Compensate for Your Past
This lie is often the invisible engine driving your frantic need to be productive. The pursuit of a perfect, clean to-do list is frequently a desperate, tiring attempt to earn back the standing or worth you feel you lost due to past failures. Whether it’s a deep regret, a season of spiritual wandering, or a mistake you can’t forgive yourself for, that shame becomes the heavy chain convincing you that only endless striving can compensate for your history. These old mistakes become the silent reason you feel you must keep proving yourself, preventing you from stepping into the freedom Christ offers today.
The Truth: God doesn’t just “deal” with your past; He redeems it. In the Kingdom, your scars aren’t your shame—they are your credentials. If God could use Rahab and Mary Magdalene, He isn’t intimidated by your history.
Lie #3: “I Have to Earn the Seat at the Table”
Many of us live with a “striving” spirit. We feel we need to be the most servant-hearted, the most quiet, or the most put-together to be truly worthy of God’s favor or the community’s respect. We compare our “behind-the-scenes” footage to everyone else’s “highlight reel.” Have you done this? Well, we all have, and it is dangerous to our mental health.
The Truth: You don’t have to claw your way to the table. You were invited. You aren’t a guest
Stop Striving and Start Thriving
Believing the truth in your head is one thing—walking it out in your daily life is another. If you’re ready to silence the inner critic and the enemy at work, you don’t have to do it alone.
