Not too long ago, I was the person who hit snooze until the absolute last second. My mornings were a frantic blur of rushing around, barely having enough time to gulp down a lukewarm coffee before dashing out the door. I used to look at those “5 AM club” enthusiasts with a mix of awe and disbeliefโI loved my sleep far too much to ever imagine joining their ranks.
Weekends were my sanctuary for marathon sleeping sessions. I felt I had “earned” the right to sleep in late after a long work week. Firmly convinced I wasn’t a morning person, I believed that only an enormous amount of sleep could fuel my performance.
However, there was a disconnect. I deeply craved a morning routine that included prayer, reading, exercise, and a healthy breakfast. I wanted to start my day centered and grounded with the Lord, rather than starting it in a state of high-stress chaos.
The transition seemed impossible. How could a night owl who cherished sleeping in transform into someone who greeted the dawn with joy?
The shift started with a vision. I sat down and wrote out exactly what I wanted my ideal morning to look like and the tangible steps I could take to get there.
I didn’t change overnight. By taking slow, intentional steps, I eventually shifted my rhythm to a 9:00 PM bedtime and a 4:30 AM wake-up call on weekdays, with a slightly more relaxed 5:00โ5:30 AM start on weekends.
If 4:30 AM sounds daunting, don’t worry! It took me years of steady progress to reach that point. For a long time, simply aiming for 5:30 AM was my sweet spot. The key is consistency over speed.
Let me share with you the benefits of an early riser before you decide this is not for me!
- Uninterrupted Solitude: Before the world wakes up and the emails and texts start flooding in, you have a sacred pocket of time just for yourself.
- Spiritual Alignment: Use the quiet to connect with God through prayer, scripture, and listening for the Holy Spirit.
- Physical Vitality: Whether it’s a brisk walk, a morning run, or a few laps in the pool, moving your body early sets a vibrant tone for the day.
- Gratitude and Joy: Taking a few minutes for a gratitude journal can significantly boost your long-term contentment.
- Proactive Planning: Map out your daily goals calmly instead of reacting to demands as they arise.
- Nutritional Success: You actually have time to prepare a healthy breakfast, like a protein-rich Greek yogurt smoothie.
- A Sense of Accomplishment: Tiding up and making the bed early signals to your brain that you’ve already achieved something productive.
Now, I truly love this lifestyle! While I still value rest and allow myself grace during vacations or when my body needs extra sleep, I find I rarely want to go back. Telling yourself you have that freedom prevents you from feeling deprived.
