In my coaching practice, I often meet people who are doing all the “right” things—managing their calendars, setting boundaries, and drinking enough water—yet they are utterly exhausted. They aren’t just physically tired; they are soul-weary.
As a Christian life coach, I’ve learned that there is a massive difference between self-reliance and God-reliance. When we operate on our own steam, we eventually hit a wall. But when we tap into the strength of the Lord, we access a reservoir that never runs dry.
If you feel like you’re running on fumes, here is how to shift from surviving to thriving through Christ.
1. The Myth of “God Won’t Give You More Than You Can Handle”
Let’s clear the air: This phrase isn’t in the Bible. In fact, life often gives us much more than we can handle.
The Apostle Paul spoke about being under great pressure, “far beyond our ability to endure” (2 Corinthians 1:8). Why? So that we would not rely on ourselves but on God. True strength begins the moment you admit you’ve reached your limit. Surrender isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s an invitation for God’s power to take the wheel.
2. Practice “The Great Exchange”
In Isaiah 40:31, we are told that those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength. In the original Hebrew, that word “renew” actually means to exchange.
Think of it like a coach swapping a tired player for a fresh one. You give God your:
- Anxiety
- Limited perspective
- Frail energy
In exchange, He gives you His peace, His wisdom, and His endurance. This happens through intentional stillness. You can’t exchange your exhaustion for His strength if you’re constantly running.
3. Feed Your Spirit, Not Just Your To-Do List
We often prioritize our physical and mental “input” but neglect our spiritual “fuel.” To gain strength from the Lord, you must stay connected to the Source.
- The Word: Scripture isn’t just information; it’s “bread” for the soul.
- Worship: Shifting your focus from your problems to God’s magnitude changes your internal chemistry.
- Community: Sometimes God’s strength reaches you through the hands and feet of other believers.
