We live in a culture that wears burnout like a badge of honor. For Christians, this exhaustion is often magnified by a misplaced sense of duty. We misinterpret “pouring ourselves out” as a command to run on empty until we completely collapse.

But when you are physically drained, mentally overwhelmed, and spiritually dry, pushing through isn’t faithful—it’s unsustainable.

True biblical self-care isn’t about selfish indulgence; it is about stewardship. God created your body, mind, and spirit as an interconnected vessel. When that vessel is empty, you cannot pour into others. Here is how Christians can practice self-care when they are completely exhausted.

1. Physical Care: Honoring the Temple

When we are overwhelmed, we tend to spiritualize problems that are actually physical. Elijah, after his intense spiritual battle on Mount Carmel, was so exhausted and depressed that he prayed to die. God’s immediate remedy wasn’t a lecture or a bible study; it was food and sleep (1 Kings 19).

  • Receive the Gift of Sleep: Psalm 127:2 reminds us, “It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.” Sleep is an act of faith. It is a daily declaration that the world can run without you, but it cannot run without God.
  • Move and Nourish Safely: You don’t need an intense workout when you are exhausted. Opt for a gentle walk in God’s creation. Eat foods that fuel your body rather than give you a temporary sugar crash.
  • Say a Holy “No”: You cannot attend every committee, volunteer for every ministry, or say yes to every social gathering. Guarding your physical energy is a prerequisite for serving effectively.

2. Mental Care: Renewing the Mind

Mental exhaustion often comes from carrying weights we were never meant to hold—worry, overthinking, and the constant noise of the world.

  • Take Thoughts Captive: Your mind can become a breeding ground for anxiety when you are tired. Practice Philippians 4:8 by actively shifting your focus to whatever is true, honorable, just, and pure.
  • Unplug from the Digital Noise: The constant influx of news, social media, and notifications keeps your brain in a perpetual state of “fight or flight.” Give yourself permission to disconnect. A digital fast—even for just a few hours a day—can dramatically lower mental fatigue.
  • Embrace Silence: We often fill every quiet moment with podcasts, music, or scrolling. Give your brain white space. Sit in silence for ten minutes and let your mind rest without processing new information.

3. Spiritual Care: Abiding, Not Striving

Spiritual exhaustion usually happens when we confuse doing things for God with being with God. If your spiritual disciplines feel like heavy chores on a to-do list, it’s time to shift from striving to abiding.

  • Lean into “Low-Effort” Devotion: When you are too tired to study the Bible or pray long, articulate prayers, simplify. Listen to an audio Bible. Play worship music in the background. Cry out with the simplest prayer in Scripture: “Lord, help me.” God hears the groans of the weary.
  • Redefine the Sabbath: Sabbath is not just a day off; it is a day of delight and cessation. What breathes life back into your soul? Is it painting? Gardening? Baking? Sitting on the porch? Do the things that make you look at God’s world and say, “Thank you.”
  • Rest in His Finished Work: Jesus’ invitation in Matthew 11:28 is specifically for the exhausted: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Notice He doesn’t offer a new strategy or a five-step plan. He offers Himself.

A Note on Grace: > Remember that your worth to God is not based on your productivity. You are loved because you are His child, not because of what you accomplish for His kingdom. Taking time to rest is an admission of your humanity and an expression of trust in His sovereignty. Now back and read this again. What does this speak to you?

Which area of exhaustion—physical, mental, or spiritual—feels the most heavy for you right now, and what is one small step you can take today to let God carry that weight?
