When You Have Nothing Left to Give: What I Do on My Lowest Energy Days

I remember last Tuesday morning when my alarm clock went off, I hit the snooze button and rolled over. I just couldn’t find the energy to get up. Normally I don’t have much trouble getting up in the morning, but last week was different. I felt tired physically, mentally, and spiritually.

It wasn’t just physical tiredness from a long week; it was a deep, bone-weary exhaustion.

When I looked over at my Bible on the nightstand, instead of feeling comfort, I felt an instant wave of guilt. I should be praying with passion. I should be jumping into my daily devotion with joy. Why can’t I just snap out of this? I could not find the energy to read my Bible or pray. I rested quietly every morning last week allowing the Lord to minister to me.

If you’ve ever found yourself in that exact spot, I want to lean in and tell you something I had to learn the hard way: God does not measure your faith by your productivity—or your energy levels.

The Hidden Battle Behind the Fatigue

For a long time, whenever I hit a wall like that, I blamed my schedule, my diet, other people, or my lack of discipline. But over years of walking with the Lord I realized something crucial: sometimes fatigue isn’t just physical; it’s spiritual.

The enemy rarely shows up with obvious temptations when he can simply paralyze you with quiet apathy. If he can make you feel too exhausted to pray, too overwhelmed to open Scripture, or too discouraged to connect with fellow believers, he achieves his goal without ever making a loud scene.

In Ephesians 6:12, Paul reminds us:

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

When sudden heaviness hits out of nowhere, ask yourself:

  • Am I suddenly feeling an irrational resistance toward anything spiritual?
  • Is my mind flooded with whispers of shame or self-condemnation?
  • Am I believing the lie that today—and tomorrow—won’t ever get better?

Recognizing this isn’t about seeing a shadow behind every corner. It’s about realizing that your apathy might actually be a targeted attack to keep you disconnected from your source of life. Once I recognized that, I stopped beating myself up and started standing my ground.

Grace-Filled Ways I Navigate Low-Energy Days

When you have zero fuel in the tank, here is how you can lean into God’s strength without burning yourself out:

1. Swap Long Devotions for “Micro-Prayers”

God doesn’t need an elaborate, 30-minute eloquent prayer to hear you. On days when words fail me, I pray single-sentence breath prayers throughout the day:

  • “Jesus, I need Your strength for the next hour.”
  • “Lord, take my weakness and give me Your peace.”

He loves sincerity, not performance.

2. Let Scripture Wash Over You (Without Studying)

You don’t need to do a deep theological breakdown when you’re exhausted. Put on audio Scripture while you lay on the couch, or read two lines of a Psalm.

3. Remember That Jesus Rested, Too

Even Jesus sat down weary by the well (John 4:6) and pulled away from crowds when He was tired. Taking a nap, letting non-essential chores wait, or setting a boundary isn’t a lack of faith—it’s acknowledging that you are human and God is God.

Whispering Truth in the Dark

When spiritual fatigue hits, your greatest weapon isn’t high energy—it’s standing firm in truth.

On my hardest days, I rely on a quiet, steady trust. I simply whisper promises from God’s Word back to my own heart:

  • When I feel like a failure: 2 Corinthians 12:9“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
  • When I feel overwhelmed: Psalm 34:18“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

You don’t have to carry the day on your shoulders. Lean into the One who carries you.
