Whose Business Are You In? How to Untangle Worry and Trust God’s Plan

Anxiety and worry can feel like a heavy fog that clouds your vision, drains your energy, and makes your world feel incredibly small. As a Christian life coach, I work with people every week who love God deeply, yet find themselves locked in a daily battle with intrusive thoughts, racing hearts, and a constant sense of dread.

If that is you right now, I want you to take a deep breath. Let’s get one thing straight from the very beginning: Experiencing anxiety is a human condition, not a spiritual failure.

Having anxious feelings doesn’t mean your faith is broken; it simply means your nervous system is overwhelmed and your focus has accidentally shifted from God’s track record to your own worst-case scenarios.

To break free from the grip of worry, we have to look at it through two lenses: the spiritual truth of Scripture and the practical action of coaching. Here is a step-by-step framework to help you move from a state of  panic to a posture of steady peace.

1. Interrupt the Loop with “Pattern Interrupts”

In coaching, I talk a lot about breaking unconscious loops. When worry strikes, your brain spirals into a “what-if” cascade. If you don’t interrupt it, your body treats those imaginary thoughts as actual, physical threats.

The Apostle Paul actually gave us the ultimate biological and spiritual pattern interrupt in Philippians 4:6:

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

Notice the mechanics of that verse. He doesn’t just say “stop it.” He tells you what to do instead

When an anxious thought hits, use a 3-Step Pattern Interrupt:

  • Pause and Acknowledge: Name the feeling without judging yourself. “I am feeling anxious right now, and that is okay.”
  • Pivot to Prayer: Instantly hand the specific raw thought over to God. No fancy language needed—just a heart cry.
  • Anchor in Thanksgiving: Force your brain to name three distinct, concrete things you are grateful for in that exact moment. Gratitude physically rewires your brain’s threat-detection center (the amygdala) to signal safety.

2. Separate “Your Business” from “God’s Business”

Most of our anxiety comes from trying to play God. We break our own backs trying to carry outcomes, control other people’s perceptions, and secure a future that hasn’t happened yet. Go back and read this again.

As your coach, I invite you to draw a firm line down the middle of your worries. 

Divide them into two categories:

Your Circle of ResponsibilityGod’s Circle of Sovereignty
Your obedience in the present momentThe final outcome of the situation
Managing your actions and attitudeChanging another person’s heart
Choosing trust over controlFunding, timing, and protecting the future

When you find yourself spiraling, ask yourself: “Whose business am I in right now?” If you are trying to micro-manage tomorrow, you are in God’s business. Step back into your own circle. Your job is simply to do the next right, obedient thing within the next 15 minutes of your day. Leave the rest to Him.

3. Shift from “What If” to “Even If”

Worry thrives on the terrifying world of “What if?”

  • What if the medical report is bad?
  • What if I lose my job?
  • What if I fail?

➡️ The problem with “What if” is that it forces you to preview a dark future without accounting for the grace that God will provide when you actually get there. You are trying to survive a hypothetical crisis on today’s emotional reserves. Now go back and read this again. 

To defeat this, I use a coaching tool called the Sovereignty Shift. You take your biggest “What if” and consciously transform it into an “Even if” statement anchored in God’s character.

  • What if I lose this job?” becomes → “Even if I lose this job, God is still my ultimate provider, and He has guided me through transitions before.”
  • What if the worst happens to my health?” becomes → “Even if the road gets incredibly difficult, God promises He will never leave me or forsake me.”

This doesn’t minimize the pain of hard circumstances. Instead, it maximizes the presence of a faithful God. It reminds your anxious heart that there is no dark alley your future can take you down where God hasn’t already arrived with a supply of mercy.

4. Guard Your Spiritual and Mental Diet

You cannot spend four hours a day consuming terrifying news headlines, toxic social media feeds, and chaotic entertainment, and then expect to have a peaceful spirit after a two-minute prayer before bed. Input dictates output.

If you want a mind that feels like a sanctuary, you have to treat it like one. Be incredibly selective about what you allow past the gates.

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” — Philippians 4:8

Take a practical inventory this week. What are you feeding your mind? Try doing a digital detox for 48 hours. Replace the morning scroll with ten minutes of reading Scripture or listening to worship music. Give your nervous system a chance to quiet down so you can actually hear the “still, small voice” of the Holy Spirit reassuring you of His love. Your First Coaching Action Step

Coaching is nothing without action. Knowledge alone doesn’t break anxiety; applied truth does.

Today, pick one specific worry that has been keeping you up at night. Write it down on a piece of paper. Underneath it, write out your “Even If” statement based on who God is. Then, physically fold that paper up, pray a prayer of surrender, and place it in a drawer or a Bible as a tangible sign that you are handing the manager’s keys of your life back to the Creator of the universe.

You don’t have to figure it all out today. He’s got you, He’s got your tomorrow, and He is entirely trustworthy.
